Silicon carbide is the hardest grain available (except for super-abrasive). As well as being used in the manufacture of coated and bonded abrasives, in finer grits, silicon carbide is often used for lapping glass or other hard materials. Finer grits are also used in the lapidary industry to polish natural and semi precious stones. Coarser grits are used for anti-slip surfaces and give an advantage over aluminium oxide because they are more angular and give a more attractive finish.
